What is the best sewing machine for my needs?
I will be designing and making clothes and doing alterations. I want a really reliable machine. And will spend up to around $800. I also will need a serger. I will not be doing any quilting on the machine most likely. I have heard Brother, Janome, and Juki are pretty good. And that the newer model Singer machines aren't the best.
What brand would be the best and if you can tell me a particular model, that would be excellent.
I can allow about $300-400 for a serger.
Personally, I like Juki sergers -- they show their industrial roots, but are easy to work with. And the prices are reasonable.
For sewing machines, I prefer Bernina, Elna, Pfaff and Viking (in alphabetical order). Janome is just a smidge behind that in preference, and Singer is... well, Singers are not what they once were. Go, test, and see what suits. I require good utility stitches, a way of making decent buttonholes that doesn't drive me nuts, and adjustable presser foot pressure. I prefer an electronic machine because you get the full force of the stepper or servo motors driving the needle even at very slow speeds that would stall a conventional motor... but you should try and find the machine that fits you.

If the $800 has to cover both serger and sewing machine, look at used sewing machines and new sergers.
me? I sew on a 12 year old midline Viking electronic that's performed flawlessly, backed up by a 1954 Singer 15 for dirty jobs. And a Juki 2/3/4/5 thread serger (MO655) and a Bernina 009D coverlock I've worn out two sewing machines and a serger over the years.
