Quilting Fabric Decision Help? I am making a quilted journal cover for my boyfriend who is going to Portugal. He likes the dark colors and I dont know how to choose the correct fabrics so it doesnt look girly. Are there certain patterns I should stay away from or go towards? What would make it more "manly"? Also, what can I put on there that has to do with Portugal? He wants something on it to do with Portugal, but Im not sure what. Should I hand stitch "Portugal 2010" on it, embroider the flag, any ideas? The single biggest thing would be to avoid any floral designs and anything "cute" (like kittens, cookware, etc. - the exception here might be 'sun' and 'beach' theme prints, as Portugal is known for its beaches). One approach to choosing fabrics would be to stick with patterns you would see in men's good-quality dress shirts - stripes, checks, plaids, and solids. Another approach is to stick with the fabrics you might see in men's pants - denim and khaki are a nice combination, for instance. A journal is likely to get a lot of handling, so you probably want to avoid any solid whites or mostly-white backgrounds, as they are likely to look grubby quickly. I would be more inclined to use the Portuguese flag than 'Portugal 2010'. You could draw it on with Pigma markers or paint pens, or you might even be able to find a patch with the flag and/or the country name that you could just sew on (even if it's 'iron on', sew it - otherwise it could easily fall off).
