Quilting - Learn Its History And Basics

The quilting craft has been around for a very long time. The Chinese have been using quilted cloth as padding for winter clothing since time immemorial. The crusaders discovered that wearing quilted cloth under their chainmail offered a lot of protection. They borrowed this idea from the Arabs and in the thirteenth century introduced it back home. European women adopted this process to create bedcovers.

In the sixteenth century, the pilgrims brought quilting to America. Due to the lack of resources it became necessary for settlers to reuse and recycle old fabrics and clothing. Hence they made quilt tops by cutting the fabric and patching together the small pieces again and again until it was completely worn out. These quilts were more practical rather than pretty but as time went on, the settlers made the designs more elaborate and colorful. The quilts were also decorated through appliqu
